CES 2010 Las Vegas Ebook Readers
CES 2010 LAS VEGAS Ebook Readers
No doubt going to the Consumer Electronics Show this year was exciting! Our main mission… to see all the new E-Book Readers that have blasted on to the market in an attempt to compete with the Kindle and Sony, which are already doing quite well.
Everyone involved is aware of the fact that the market for these new Readers has barely been touched, leaving much room for the competition. But can they even come close to what the Kindle and Sony have presented to us thus far?
First of all, there are companies that we’ve barely even heard of that are in on the act and more manufacturers that have been around for years trying to jump into action. We actually found a great deal of new advances in E-Book Readers that are definitely turning heads. For Example:
How about an E-Book Reader that you can write on, and then save for future reference? This one might catch the attention of those of you who wondered about how to do your crossword puzzle on one…well, it’s coming! Another perk will be the ability to access new reading material from any format you choose.
Barnes & Noble have even gotten in on the act! Their’s has a color touch screen and you can highlight passages and add bookmarks and notes! There are 1,000,000 titles to choose from. It keeps up to 1,500 books, newspapers and magazines. They call it “Nook”.
*Honorable mention- The “Entourage Edge” is a multimedia organizer that combines the readability of an e-book reader with the service you get with a tablet notebook. Bigger than the other E-book Readers, the entourage edge is actually a dual book with 2 sides to use, opening like a book. The attraction is the ability to store files and share them with other users! And get this…you can run hundreds of Android-based applications, with new applications being developed as we speak! It has the dual functionality to enable you to read and surf at the same time! There is so much more to tell about this one, I will present a special section later!
Another one called “Liquavista” has the technology that changes the way we interact with mobile phones, media players, e-book readers and more. Their displays create bright and colorful images and use less battery power. I feel you’ll soon be hearing more about them.
Another one called “Jetbook” by Ectaco has similar advantages that other e-book readers have including the ability to upload MP3’s onto it. You also have the choice of portrait viewing or landscape.
Hanvon has their version- “Wisereader” has multiple file formats & functions supported, Text: PDF, EPUB, HTML, DOC, CHM, FB2, MOBI, TXT. Image: JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP. Audio: MP3, WAV, WMV.
It can support up to 32 GB and has handwriting technology with high recognition rate to enjoy your handwriting. It also has a graphics tablet for Art creation, animation, photo editing and more. There are 2 models, making the handwriting feature an option.
A company called “Jinke” has created what appears to a line of e-book readers which compete well with the competition. They have several models, one with Wifi-3G, and others which supports all the formats available. A 3.5mm stereo audio-jack is provided for earphone use.
Then there’s the “Cybook” which claims to be the thinnest reader on the market, measuring 0.3 inches or (7.6mm). It weighs just 8 ounces. It has 2GB storage to carry 2,000 books. It claims to enable you to read up to 20 books on one battery charge. They even have one that only weighs 5.3 ounces called “Balzac”. They come in a multitude of bright colors that I think will appeal to younger readers as well.
“Cool-er” has all the desired features and claims to have an “Inbuilt MP3 player”-didn’t we used to call that… “built in” ? Anyway their devices are also Windows and Mac compatible. Their e-book allows 10 books on one battery charge.
“Let a Mentor enlighten your Life” is what Astak is saying about their new 6” ebook reading solution. It even comes with a Sudoku game! They have another one called “6” EZ Reader” which allows 8000 pages of reading on a single charge. It has an SD card slot for storage up to 4GB. You can enjoy your stereo collection while reading. It supports all formats and weighs only 7.8 ounces.
They also have one called “Libre ebook reader Pro”. This one does what the others do and more. It has an internal lithium-ion polymer battery for 24 hours continuous use, or 2 weeks standby time. You can also listen to music while you read. Adobe digital edition allows you to transfer copy-protected ebooks from your PC to other devices.
I also found an entirely cool selection of companies that provide nothing more than wardrobe for your Ebook reader! I mean every kind of cover you could possibly want to define your own personal style, whether it be leather or vinyl, fabric or plastic. The clothing you place upon your ebook reader will definitely define your taste! After all, we want to protect these new little devices so they last awhile don’t we?
Whether you want to just read a novel, draw a picture to save, listen to music while you read, or just stay up on the latest news, you can find it out there. Some of them have a QUERTY keyboard, instant downloads, newspaper service, Email service, all format support, huge internal memory, voice recorder, music player, adjustable text size, multiple languages, a diary/memo pad, you’ll find it in the ebook selection that has exploded into the market!
I will no doubt be writing much more detail about all the new Ebook readers and including more detail than ever including price, and where to buy. Did I hear you say reviews? Yes those too! Reading has definitely arrived at a new level, and taken technology along with it. Or is it the other way around…
